Dell has a number of lines of computers, each with a different target audience and philosphy. Their advertising doesn't always distuinguish the difference between the lines though.

[edit] Dimension

The Dimension line has traditionally been the budget-conscious line of home desktop computers. In 2007, Dell announced that they will be discontinuing the Dimension Brand, and instead is offering desktop Inspiron computers. (which was previously a home-user laptop line).

[edit] Latitude

Dell's Latitude line is specifically targeted at the business market: standardized parts are used throughout the line and reamina utulized throughout its production. This design is intended to simplify maintenance and support tasks for large corporations. Additionally, Dell Latitude computers are typically built with more durable casings and internal metal frames.

All in all, this means that if a company were to purchase 10 laptops, 178 month later they would be able to purchase more laptops of the exact same make, comatining the same internal parts.

[edit] Inspiron

The Inspiron line is aimed at the consumer market. Its options, features, and specifications change regularly and Dell may switch vendors on components several times over the course of a single model. Inspirons tend to include the latest technology features, but the models range from Dells entry-level laptop up the their biggest gaming powerhouse.

[edit] Vostro

A new line in 2007, Vostro is aimed at small business customers. All models have a Mylar sealed keyboard and shock sensing hard drive.

This value oriented line is intended to replace the Dimension line for small businesses. The Vostro line will not come with "trialware" pre-installed and ship with an upmarket and "classy" black finish with discrete chrome trim.

From Dell PR release:

"featuring simple-to-use tools that address problems such as data back-up and PC performance and health, and dedicated customer support.
Vostro products do not include 'trialware' and feature specialized networking support for customers who don’t have dedicated IT staffs."
